remembering Mandela

Nelson Mandela.
Pic from here
It would seem to me to be ridiculous to write a blog post about anything else in the light of Nelson Mandela's death.

But what to say about Nelson Mandela?  To be honest, I do not know a lot.  The man has some wonderful quotes attributed to him, of which more below, but mainly I knew of him as the figurehead of the campaign against the awful system of apartheid.

Of course, having defeated apartheid, Mandela went on to lead his beloved country forward.  All is not perfect in South Africa now, but things are so much better.

Mandela is already a legendary character.  He survived trials, and kept his head up, and his heart strong.  He helped to conquer a great evil, and he lived happily ever after.

Of course he didn't.  He had personal tragedy, and I'm sure that there are mean-spirited tales that may emerge in the weeks to come, but a light has gone out in the world with his loss.  He truly was inspirational.

Like I said, there are lots of quotes attributed to Mandela.  Here are a few of my favourites (taken, with thanks, from Nelson Mandela Online):
We can change the world and make it a better place.  It is in your hands to make a difference.
It always seems impossible until it is done.
I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.
What's your favourite Mandela quote?  And what has Mandela inspired in you?
